Some prescription drugs are so dangerous that even health related
industry groups feel compelled to speak out against the drugs in order
to protect the health of patients. In this case, a joint report by the
American Diabetes Association, American Psychiatric Association,
American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the North
American Association for the study of Obesity complained that an entire
class of antipsychotic drugs increases the risk of diabetes. Or, but
briefly, take the drugs for your head, and lose your pancreas. A
manufacturer of one of these drugs said basically this isn't news: these
side effects are well known in the medical community, they explain. If
they are well known, why are these drugs still allowed to be prescribed?
You already know the answer: they are profitable, and the FDA protects
and promotes profitable drugs, regardless of their negative health
consequences. To have four industry groups actually speak out
against a class of prescription drugs is exceedingly rare, and it is
indicative of the high degree of threat to the good health of patients
posed by these drugs.
