Summary
Amazingly, the winner of the annual New York Coney Island hot dog eating contest was NOT an American: it was a mega-eater from Japan. Of course, what I'm most curious about is how quickly these contestants will be developing brain tumors and leukemia from consuming such large quantites of food additives found in hot dogs, such as sodium nitrite, a powerful cancer-causing additive.

Details
- - Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi of Japan downed a world-record 53 1/2 hot dogs in 12 minutes on Sunday, blowing away his rivals for the fourth year in a row.
- The diminutive 26-year-old Japanese, known as The Gurgitator, successfully retained the Mustard Yellow International Belt - the World Cup of competitive eating - at the July 4 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog event at New York's Coney Island.
- American Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, weighing in at a mere 45kg, came third with a total of 32 dogs, shattering the women's world record and restoring some pride to the host nation, which has had to cede its traditional dominance of the event since Kobayashi burst onto the scene.
