- Nasa plans to spend $100bn to develop a new space shuttle and rocket engines over the next 12 years to send a four-man crew for a one-week stay on the moon in '18, according to the website space.com.
- Nasa director Michael Griffin is to announce details of the plans Monday in Washington.
- The space organisation is following up on President George W Bush's promise last year to return to the moon by '20.
- After the manned spaceship lands on the moon, Mars will be Nasa's next stop.
- The last human to set foot on the moon was Harrison Schmitt, the US pilot of Apollo 17, on December 12, 1972.
