• A new study reports that regular use of acetaminophen, the pain reliever sold under the name Tylenol, may be associated with a higher risk of asthma and other lung problems.
• "Evidence is beginning to emerge about the potentially harmful effects of consistent use of acetaminophen on respiratory health," the authors write in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
• The study was led by Dr. Tricia M. McKeever of the University of Nottingham in England.
• The findings are based on a study of more than 13,000 Americans, who were asked about their use of painkillers, along with other questions.
• Participants were also given physical examinations, which included tests of lung function.
• The study found that people who used the drug regularly --- 6 to 29 times a month --- were more likely to have asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
• People who took it daily were more likely to have decreased lung function.
