The anti-free speech Left claims another victim – or not – as Ann Coulter vows to speak at Berkeley despite event cancellation

To liberals, no one is more vile and divisive than right-leaning pundit, author and lawyer Ann Coulter. To conservatives, few other public figures are seen as such vociferous defenders of liberty, justice and constitutional principles.

So it only makes sense in today’s super-charged political discourse that a major hero of the Right would be invited to speak on the campus of UC-Berkeley, one of the most Marxist-Left venues in the country.

That said, the speech may not happen at all. But then again, it just might.

After being invited to speak by a pair of conservative campus organizations and then agreeing to ridiculous conditions such as giving her speech during the daytime and the university only announcing her venue at the last minute, cowardly administrators decided to cancel her appearance altogether, citing “security concerns.” (RELATED: Brown University Students Claim The First Amendment Doesn’t Include ALL Speech, Only Views They Agree With)

In other words, the Marxist “Antifa” thugs that ran Milo Yiannopolos off the Berkeley campus earlier this year, then smashed windows, damaged buildings and destroyed equipment have won another battle, while the First Amendment has lost another.

As reported by the Washington Examiner, UC-Berkeley Dean of Students sent an email to the student body on Wednesday telling them the university canceled the event because it could not provide Coulter with a “safe and suitable venue.”

“Given current active security threats, it is not possible to assure that the event could be held successfully – or that the safety of Ms. Coulter, the event sponsors, audience, and bystanders could be adequately protected – at any of the campus venues,” he wrote.

The Young America’s Foundation, one of the events’ principle sponsors, said in a statement to the Washington Examiner that Coulter – in agreeing to all of the university’s demands – had only two demands of her own, both of which pertained to safety:

1) That the University of California chancellor request that the Oakland chief of police refrain from telling his men to stand down and ignore law-breaking by rioters attempting to shut down conservative speakers, as he has done in the past; and

2) That UC-Berkeley announce in advance that any students engaging in violence, mayhem or heckling to prevent an invited speaker from speaking would be expelled.

As Coulter explained, “If Berkeley wants to have free speech, it can have it.”

Instead, the response was to ban the speech.

Coulter, however, is having none of it. She has vowed to speak anyway.

“Yes, it was officially banned,” Coulter told The Hollywood Reporter, regarding her canceled speech. “But they can’t stop me. I’m an American. I have constitutional rights.”

She said she plans to talk about immigration, the subject of one of her 12 bestselling books.

“If that’s banned, then no conservative can speak,” she said.

“Meanwhile, corrupt banana republic leaders like Vicente Fox have the red carpet rolled out for them on the taxpayer’s dime,” she continued, referring to the former Mexican president who spoke on the campus this week.

“I’m giving a speech,” Coulter insisted. “Speech will go on.”

She’s right, of course. The entire point of the speech cancellation – which essentially was done to accede to the threat of violence of the Marxist Left – is to silence conservative speech, while allowing any and all manner of liberal speech. And this is becoming more and more prevalent on all major U.S. college campuses. (RELATED: Fed Up: North Carolina State University Students Sue To Uphold Their Free Speech Rights)

As noted by The National Sentinel, at least one person has a plan to combat the violent, thuggish Left and its intimidation tactics:

Mark Levin, talk radio giant, attorney and former chief of staff for the Reagan Justice Department suggested on his program Wednesday evening: President Donald J. Trump should federalize elements of the California National Guard, deploy them to the university, and have Attorney General Jeff Sessions personally escort Coulter onto the stage so she can give her speech.

That’s a great idea, and in fact, it mirrors what then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan did in dealing with violence on the Berkeley campus in 1969. He ordered the California Highway Patrol and Berkeley police to “use whatever method they choose against the protestors” – his words.

And they did exactly that, as the video below shows. He then declared a state of emergency and sent in the California National Guard.
