Yellow school buses give kids cancer
by Mike Adams (see all articles by this author)
It's true: the older, diesel-powered yellow school buses are polluting the air the kids breathe, increasing their chances of cancer by 4% over kids who ride newer buses.
- SACRAMENTO (AP) - Going to school in the familiar yellow school buses
may be exposing children to dangerous doses of exhaust, according to a
recent government study.
- A study released by the California Air Resources Board showed that
toxic fumes from the bus' own engine and from surrounding traffic
entered older vehicles.
- This exposed kids to levels of pollution two to five times greater
than those riding new buses, increasing their risk of cancer by 4
percent.
- Gina Solomon, the NRDC's lead researcher and study author, said riding
a bus is safer than other ways for children to get to school and
pollution problems can be solved by retrofitting or replacing the older
buses.
