Dell, HP unveil free computer recycling programs
by Mike Adams, NaturalNews Editor
It's nice to see computer makers doing something responsible for the environment. In this case, Dell and HP have both announced computer recycling programs that are free to customers. The idea is simple: when customers buy new computers from Dell or HP, they can recycle their old computers at no charge. Computers may contain an array of chemicals and materials that are hazardous to the environment, including PCBs and mercury.
- Hewlett-Packard and Dell, the world's largest PC makers, on Tuesday sought to improve their environmental credentials by announcing free, but temporary, programmes to help US consumers recycle old electronics goods.
- HP said it would team up with Office Depot, the office goods retailer, to provide a free in-store electronics recycling programme in which consumers could drop off any brand of unwanted electronics at any Office Depot store.
- Meanwhile, Dell said it would pick up for free old computers belonging to US consumers who purchase a number of its desktop or notebook computers.
- Dell, HP or Office Depot would not state how much these offers would cost each company.
