Both the USDA and FDA put profits ahead of public safety
by Mike Adams (see all articles by this author)
Here's an outstanding editorial on the current sad state of food safety
in the U.S. It compares actions on food safety to those of the Pentagon
and Bush Administration on terrorism: they will do practically anything
to stop terrorists who have killed around 3,000 Americans, but they do
virtually nothing to stop the terrifying threat of mad cow disease,
which threatens hundreds of millions. Prescription drugs, too, kill
100,000 American each year even when used correctly. That's more than
thirty times the deaths of 9/11. Where is the government to
protect us from profit-seeking pharmaceutical companies?
In one case
after another, our own government puts profits first, public safety
last. Exposing the meat-eating public to beef that contains spinal cord
tissue is no worry in Washington. They're out to protect industry. And
the FDA, of course, seems determined to protect the profits of drug
companies. It's no wonder: more than half the employees at the FDA and
USDA used to work in the very industries they now regulate.
- It was a surprise to many of us who considered national defense to be
the federal government's primary mission that it took 9/11 to spark its
interest in homeland security.
- Likewise, it's a surprise it took a mad cow's meat getting into
cheeseburgers to interest the government in food safety.
- It's safe to surmise there aren't many Americans who realized before
last week that obviously sick cattle are routinely becoming part of the
food we feed ourselves and our children.
- Fully two-thirds of these are worn-out dairy cows, which generally are
among the most chemical-laced creatures on the planet, heavily dosed
with artificial hormones and antibiotics.
- It's been well known for a decade that these are the primary places
where the substance is found that causes mad cow disease.
