The city of Chicago saw a bloody weekend as police recorded more than 50 shooting incidents, with 10 deaths directly resulting from these.
An incident involving police officers was among the weekend shootings recorded. Two officers were wounded while engaging a suspect at a traffic stop in the Homan Square neighborhood on the early morning of Aug. 30, after police received reports of a vehicle with an armed occupant. The said vehicle was flagged at the stop after officers saw a gun inside and ordered the driver to step out.
However, the occupant refused and locked himself in the vehicle – forcing officers to break the windows. The suspect shot two officers in the struggle, only to be shot by another officer at the stop. The injured officers and the suspect were taken to different hospitals to receive medical care. One of the officers shot has been discharged, while the other is still recovering from his injuries. The perpetrator is now facing multiple charges of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, with a judge setting his bail at $10 million.
Meanwhile, another incident on the afternoon of Aug. 30 involved five people being shot while eating at a restaurant’s outdoor dining area in the Morgan Park neighborhood.
A white sport-utility vehicle pulled up at the back parking of Lumes Pancake House, where tents were set up for diners. The perpetrators got off the vehicle and fired through an opening at one of the tents, immediately fleeing afterward. A 31-year-old man died while four others – three women and a man – were wounded. Police are now investigating the incident.
Other shooting incidents in Chicago were reported from Friday evening until Sunday evening.
Democrat mayors are disregarding calls to address increased crime in their cities
Chicago has seen a sudden rise in gun-related violence under Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
A report by The Chicago Tribune said that the city recorded more than 500 homicide incidents for 2020 alone – the highest number since 2016. As of Aug. 31, the department reported that there were 505 homicide incidents recorded and 2,703 people shot - a big jump from last year that only had 333 homicide incidents and 1,734 people shot.
President Donald Trump has called out several Democrat mayors for the increased amount of violence in their cities and exhorted them to restore law and order, including Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and others.
However, the president’s calls were not warmly received by some of the mayors he addressed. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said he appreciated if Trump stayed out of the way, while New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio claimed nobody has done more to set back the city and America at large than the current president.
However, the heaviest burden on addressing this violence falls on law enforcement units themselves. Police departments in other U.S. cities are facing budget cuts from their respective city councils after calls from Black Lives Matter protesters to defund the police.
The city council of Austin, Texas, voted to slash $150 million from law enforcement budgets – leading the county judge of nearby Williamson County to ask for State Trooper reinforcements. The city council of Portland, where Antifa doxed law enforcement officers there, passed a budget removing $15 million from police allocations.
