Florida congressional candidate Jose Castillo accused the company of "trying to influence politics" after it announced plans to cover abortion travel costs for other workers. The firm's announcement came in the form of an internal memo released following the overturn of the Roe v. Wade abortion ruling on June 24.
According to the Disney employee, the memo serves as "another attempt … to take a political stance that will inevitably alienate potential customers."
"Disney knew full well that this memo would be leaked and make national news," Castillo told the New York Post. "They sent it anyway because Disney wants to make a political statement and attempt, once more, to influence our country's political process."
He added: "As we have seen in recent months, Disney's political activism has hurt the company financially. It is my belief that the [Disney] board of directors is violating its fiduciary duty to shareholders by continuing to comment on divisive political matters." According to the Post, Disney joined several other companies – including Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, American Express, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Apple, Starbucks and Lyft – in taking similar action following the overturn. Other firms such as McDonald's, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Tyson Foods, Walmart and Marriott did not issue statements.
The conservative-majority Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that protected abortion as a federal right in a 5-4 vote. Five Republican-appointed justices on the bench voted yes, while the remaining three Democratic appointees voted no. Chief Justice John Roberts, a conservative, joined the majority opinion.
Of the five magistrates, three of them – Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett – were appointed by former President Donald Trump. Justice Samuel Alito was appointed by former President George W. Bush while Justice Clarence Thomas, the most senior on the bench, was appointed by former President George H.W. Bush.
Prior to Castillo's remarks, Disney had also been paying for surgical procedures and hormone supplements for its transgender employees – mainly through corporate insurance.
Christopher Rufo of the City Journal was responsible for revealing this bombshell to the general public by means of leaked footage. He posted on Twitter the video clip purportedly recorded during the Disney Reimagine Tomorrow virtual summit.
"Disney has adopted a benefits program to assist employees and their minor children with 'gender affirmation procedures.' This type of treatment typically includes puberty blockers, breast removal and genital surgeries for 'kids who are transitioning,'" he wrote.
Rufo's video showed an unidentified Disney employee explaining the company's efforts to support transgender employees.
"The other big area we are working on is gender identity and expression," said the employee. "We are doing all of this work to ensure that our employees and cast [members] can express their gender here authentically and proudly at the company. [Disney management is] working on coming up with guides on how to change your photo [and] information about pronouns."
The employee added that Disney's benefits team can provide more details about "gender affirmation procedures, both for our employees who are transitioning or [already] trans, [and] also for our employees who have kids who are transitioning."
PJ Media columnist Megan Fox wrote that Disney, which "built its brand on families with children and then turned on that customer base for the latest political fad that is harming children, deserves every bit of ruin and ridicule they are getting."
