Amidst the rise of high-tech electronic vehicles (EV), so far, none of them can handle the ultra-fast charger developed by a Swiss company. The EV supercharger is said to be able to provide up to 200 kilometers of range in just eight short minutes.
Recently, the company ABB introduced the Terra High Power DC fast charger to the public. It boasts of 350 kilowatts, which is three times higher than that of Tesla’s line-up of superchargers. The downside is, no EV is compatible with such a powerful technology.
During the launch, head of ABB Global Business for Electric Vehicle Charging, Frank Muehlon, said, “We are committed to supporting the expansion of electric vehicle charging systems across the globe to drive cleaner environments. Creating innovative state-of-the-art and energy efficient solutions which are scalable to expand and flex with our customers’ needs is at the heart of ABB’s philosophy.”
This supercharger is ideal for rest stops and gasoline stations. Currently, it has the capacity to charge both 400- and 800-volt cars at full power. Moreover, the ABB deploys it in such a way that two car batteries can be charged at the same time.
With the addition of Dynamic DC power-sharing technology, multiple vehicles will be able to use the charger at once. It is also possible to add power cabinets and charge posts after installation. This idea is said to be more efficient in terms of cost and is a future-proof solution for the growing industry of electric vehicles.
Using the ABB Ability Connected Services, operators with the Terra HP can easily connect it to back offices, payment platforms, or smart grid systems. Furthermore, maintenance is more cost-effective and time-saving as the product can be diagnosed and fixed remotely.
More importantly, this supercharger is linked to a wide variety of payment methods and has an easy-to-use interface.
Before the release of the Terra High Power, the current EV chargers are in no way comparable to the Swiss product. A CHAdeMO charger is only packed with 62.5 kilowatts, cars can get as much as 19.2 kilowatts from a J1772 charger, while the Tesla Supercharger can pump 120 kilowatts into a Model S. The difference between 120 and 350 is really great.
However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, said in 2016, that he doesn’t find such development impressive, even going as far as comparing a 350-kilowatt charger to a children’s toy. (Related: Overhyped electric cars and ethanol are ‘greenwashed’ scams that ultimately cause more pollution than fossil fuels.)
For “Electric Terry,” advocate of electric vehicles and renewable energy, this milestone reached by ABB is no joke, especially from a technical point of view. “Filling up a lithium battery is a lot like filling an empty milk jug with a pressure washer. If it’s completely empty, you can squeeze that trigger and just blast it in there. But almost right away, you’ve gotta start backing off the pressure or the water will start foaming out – and that’s where you can get actual physical damage to the battery,” he explained.
ABB has been contributing to the EV industry in 2010 and so far has deployed more than 6,500 DC fast chargers across the globe for both private and commercial vehicles. Today, the Swiss company is aiming to leave its footprint in different places and has partnered with Electrify America for its distribution in the U.S.
