Mexican president slams Biden border policies after more than 50 illegals die in Texas

The leader of Mexico denounced President Joe Biden for his lax border policies. His remarks followed the discovery of more than 50 dead illegal immigrants in a tractor-trailer in San Antonio.

"It happens because there is trafficking of people and a lack of control, in this case [not only] at the Mexico-U.S. border, but also in the U.S. interior," said Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. He added that "poverty and desperation" prevalent among the Central American migrants – including some from his country – played a role in the unfortunate incident.

Mexican Exterior Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard elaborated on the immigrants abandoned in the trailer in a June 28 tweet. Based on information given by U.S. authorities, the contingent of illegal aliens included 22 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans and two Hondurans. Ebrard added that the nationalities of the other immigrants are yet to be identified.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that 48 people died at the scene on June 27. Five others who were taken to different hospitals were later pronounced dead. This raised the total deaths to 53, a county spokesperson said on June 29. (Related: 51 Migrants died in sweltering tractor-trailer in San Antonio; TX governor blames Biden.)

Francisco Garduño, the director of the Mexican National Immigration Institute, said the truck had been carrying 67 migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Several others remained in medical facilities while being treated for heat-related illnesses. According to rescuers who first arrived at the scene, the abandoned illegals were hot to the touch and "too weak" to move on their own.

Officials said 40 of the deceased victims were male and 13 were female. Thirty-seven of the victims had potential identifications as of June 29, they added.

It remained unclear how long the immigrants were kept inside the trailer, which had no air conditioning or water available inside.

Texas Gov. Abbott also points finger at Biden

Lopez Obrador may have found an ally in the person of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who likewise blasted Biden for the deaths of the illegal aliens.

"Because of the way that the Biden administration is not enforcing immigration laws, it's attracting people and enticing people to make this very dangerous trek and lose their lives," he said during a press conference in the city of Eagle Pass while flanked by armed National Guard members and law enforcement leaders.

The Republican governor added that "many of these deaths could be prevented if Biden simply fully funded [U.S]. Border Patrol operations."

Meanwhile, neither the White House nor the Department of Homeland Security responded to requests for comment.

The Texas governor had previously made headlines by transporting migrants by bus to Washington, D.C. as a response to the Biden administration ending Title 42 expulsions. The first busload arrived at the federal capital on April 13, while a second busload arrived the next day on April 14.

"There's one thing that is perfectly clear, and that is the Biden administration and a lot of leaders in Congress have no idea about the chaos they have caused by their open border policies," Abbott told reporters in Laredo, Texas.

"They refuse to come down and see first hand and talk to the people who are really most adversely affected. If they’re not going to come to the border, I’m going to take the border to them and Washington, D.C."

A statement from Abbott's office reiterated Texas' resolve in protecting the border: "As the federal government continues to turn a blind eye to the border crisis, the state of Texas will remain steadfast in our efforts to fill in the gaps and keep Texans safe. Texas should not have to bear the burden of the Biden administration's failure to secure our border."
