Secret CCP “police stations” discovered in LA, NYC
By Ramon Tomey // Dec 08, 2022

Secret "police stations" operated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had been discovered in Los Angeles (LA) and New York City (NYC).

In a Dec. 5 update to its earlier findings, nonprofit Safeguard Defenders revealed the existence of 48 new overseas police stations tied to Beijing – with two previously unknown facilities in LA and NYC among the new discoveries. All in all, the group discovered more than 100 such outposts spread out across 53 countries across the globe.

According to Safeguard Defenders, these facilities have been used by the CCP to carry out a campaign of repression aimed at dissidents.

The report elaborated that the police stations in NYC and LA, overseen by the Wenzhou Public Security Bureau based in the eastern coastal Chinese province of Zhejiang, were established in 2018. At first glance, the facilities were allegedly created to assist Chinese immigrants in foreign countries with tasks normally assigned to a consulate such as renewing driver's licenses and visas.

However, the CCP's United Front Work Department (UFWD) appears to be increasingly linked to the foreign outposts. The UFWD seeks to advance Beijing's interests abroad by spreading propaganda, conducting foreign influence operations, suppressing dissident movements, gathering intelligence and facilitating the transfer of technology to the mainland. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) blasted Beijing's encroachment in an email to the Epoch Times. She had been among several Republican lawmakers who demanded an explanation from Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Attorney General Merrick Garland for the facilities' existence.

"It's outrageous that the Chinese government is exercising extraterritorial law enforcement on U.S. soil," Malliotakis wrote. "It should be a top priority of Blinken and Garland to shut down these stations to protect our Chinese-American constituents and our nation's sovereignty from foreign encroachment."

UFWD-linked Chinese outposts also found in Europe

Aside from the U.S., the CCP also established similar outposts across Europe.

Citing the Telegraph, Breitbart reported on two such police stations in the British capital London. One of the facilities is registered as a real estate agency, while the other is registered as a food delivery office. A third police outpost, located in the city of Glasgow, is registered as a Chinese restaurant.

Reporters from the British publication visited the two London-based stations, which both denied links to the UFWD when asked.

The Netherlands is also home to two such facilities, according to DutchReview. CCP outposts had been active in the city of Rotterdam and the capital Amsterdam since 2018. The Dutch government ordered the immediate closure of both overseas police stations, citing the failure of Beijing to inform Amsterdam of their existence.

"This is yet another example of how China is infiltrating the Netherlands," said Dutch lawmaker Ruben Brekelmans. His fellow legislator Sjoerd Sjoerdsma agreed, saying: "Now that it is clear that these two secret police stations operate illegally here, we can hardly wait a day. These activities must be stopped as soon as possible, and the stations must be closed."

Peter Dahlin, the founder of Safeguarding Defenders, put in his two cents on the issue.

"Considering that the U.S., Canada and Australia are, by far, the most popular countries for overseas Chinese, one would have expected more stations around those. Yet, it may point toward an already well-established network of 'overseas' or 'Chinese diaspora' associations in those places, unlike in Europe," he told Breitbart.

"We were somewhat surprised to see the heavy focus on Europe among the 54 stations Safeguard Defenders have so far uncovered. There are bound to be many more as Chinese government documents indicate, yet the focus on Europe is striking."
