Illinois councilman suggests people should host illegal immigrants in their homes to ease taxpayer burdens
By Zoey Sky // Feb 13, 2024

According to a councilman from a Chicago suburb, some members of his community should open their homes to illegal immigrants to help with the ongoing immigration crisis.

Councilman Josh McBroom shared the bizarre idea during a City Council meeting in Naperville, Illinois, where he also claimed that it is "a very affluent" and "compassionate community" where residents have "a lot of big homes."

McBroom said he doesn't believe that Naperville should use taxpayer dollars to help house or assist the illegal immigrant families arriving in droves in the Chicago area. He added that lawmakers hear from many constituents calling for local leaders to "do more" to help with the swarms of illegal immigrants seeking asylum in neighboring Chicago, a sanctuary city.

Naperville has a population of at least 149,000 people. (Related: Video shows illegal aliens lining up to receive FREE housing in New York City.)

According to McBroom, the community is rather affluent, with many spacious homes. He suggested that they should create a sign-up sheet to find out if anyone would volunteer to rehome migrant families.

No formal voting yet on McBroom's proposal

McBroom hoped residents would volunteer for the rehoming scheme he proposed, while also suggesting that officials seek support from the diocese.

While McBroom’s fellow council members Paul Leong, Jennifer Bruzan Taylor and Nate Wilson all support his proposal, no formal vote was taken on the suggestion.

Reports suggest that the idea could be brought back for further discussion at a future council meeting after further vetting.

Another council member said that, on estimate, McBroom’s plan would require at least 16 hours of city staff time.

According to a spokesperson for the Naperville city manager’s office, Naperville's City Council has asked staff to prepare a future agenda item, "so [the] council may consider whether to create a sign-up opportunity for residents to volunteer to host migrants."

The spokesperson also explained that the Naperville City Council hasn’t made any final decisions or taken any final action on the issue. Additionally, the spokesperson said until the council provides more direction, "no further details will be available."

Chicago dealing with a "remarkable challenge"

Since August 2022, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sent more than 31,100 migrants to the Chicago area as part of "Operation Lonestar," a multi-agency effort to halt illegal crossings and prevent human smuggling across the border, said his office.

As of Jan. 17, six buses carrying migrants have stopped at Naperville’s downtown Metra station since Dec. 21, 2023, reported city spokeswoman Linda LaCloche.

McBroom’s suggestion came after Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said that the Biden administration should do more to resolve the immigration crisis affecting the city.

Johnson also said that the current influx of illegal immigrants is unsustainable without a significant increase in federal support. He added that in December 2023, the city was housing 15,000 illegal immigrants in 27 temporary shelters while a total of 4,500 children were in the Chicago public schools system.

The mayor argued that the city is dealing with a "remarkable challenge," adding that the lack of a "significant investment" from the federal government means it wouldn't only be Chicago that is unable to manage the influx of illegal immigrants but all of America.

Meanwhile, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has also asked the Biden administration to do more to help the state deal with the influx of migrants. In his letter to the White House late last year, Pritzker warned that the situation is becoming "untenable" and that Illinois is struggling with the constant flow of people.
