Biden calls China, Russia, India, Japan “xenophobic” for not letting in more immigrants
By Arsenio Toledo // May 06, 2024

President Joe Biden has called India and Japan – two close allies of the United States – as well as Russia and China "xenophobic" countries because they do not want to welcome immigrants, which he claims is the reason why their economies are struggling to grow.

Biden made this statement during a recent campaign fundraiser wherein he criticized nations that were taking in fewer migrants while arguing that net migration has bolstered the economy of the United States.

"Why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they're xenophobic. They don't want immigrants," he said at the event. "One of the reasons why our economy's growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants."

Despite claiming that the American economy is booming, data from the Department of Commerce's own Bureau of Economic Analysis proves that this is not the case.

Data from the bureau indicates that 2024's first-quarter real gross domestic product growth was at 1.6 percent, the worst quarterly performance since the economy contracted by 0.6 percent in the second quarter of 2022 under Biden.

This level of growth is also one-third below economists' and Biden's expectations of real GDP growth of 2.4 percent. Furthermore, this also represents a massive drop from 2023's fourth quarter rate of 3.4 percent and third quarter rate of 4.9 percent. In a statement, Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyan Jaishankar said the country has historically had a fairly relaxed immigration policy and is on a strong economic footing.

"First of all, our economy is not faltering," said Jaishankar before discussing the country's immigration policy. "I think we should be open to people who have the need to come to India, who have a claim to come to India."

Meanwhile, the Japanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. said that it has raised the issue of Biden's remark with administration officials and described the president's words as "unfortunate" and "not based on an accurate understanding of Japan's policies."

"His comment was not made with the intent of undermining the importance and permanence of the Japan-U.S. relationship" and would not affect Japan's future work with the U.S., said the embassy.

The White House has also been trying to downplay the president's remarks, with National Security Adviser John Kirby claiming that Biden did not mean to offend either Japan or India and that the president's comments were more about U.S. immigration policy, which was Biden's "broader point."

"Our allies know very well how much the president respects them," said Kirby.
