South African transgender refugee charged with manslaughter for stabbing Syrian security guard to death in Germany
By Laura Harris // Jun 06, 2024

A South African-born transgender woman has been arrested in Germany for allegedly stabbing a 33-year-old Syrian security guard to death.

According to several reports, a colleague discovered the Syrian victim, who was working as a security guard at a refugee shelter in Potsdam, Brandenburg, on the premises of the asylum accommodation on Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse at around 4:30 a.m. on May 30, while suffering from severe stab wounds. The colleague rushed the victim to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries later that morning.

The authorities quickly responded to the scene, deploying sniffer dogs and clearing off the area near Sanssouci Park to gather evidence and locate the suspect.

Plainclothes officers trailed and arrested the suspect following a verbal altercation at a nearby market. The suspect was detained in Berlin near the Zoologischer Garten train station that same day, with the homicide squad of the West Police Directorate leading the interrogation. (Related: Transgender convicted of murder and rape files lawsuit demanding to be released into general population of women’s prison.)

The Potsdam Public Prosecutor's Office has requested that the local district court bring the suspect before a judge in Potsdam on charges of manslaughter.

However, the authorities have only disclosed limited details about the stabbing, as the investigation is still in its initial stages.

Potsdam Mayor Mike Schubert, a vocal opponent of anti-migrant sentiment in Germany, expressed his sorrow over the incident: "Today is a sad day for our city. A person who protected people seeking protection on behalf of our city has become the victim of a violent crime."

LGBT Africans are escaping abuse in their home countries only to become murderers

The phenomenon of refugees identifying as transgender seeking asylum in Europe from Africa is well-documented, as many face significant risks of physical assault and persecution in their home countries.

In 2021, a Human Rights Watch report highlighted the dangers faced by the LGBT community in Cameroon. Since February 2021, security forces have arbitrarily arrested, beaten or threatened at least 24 people, including a 17-year-old boy, for alleged consensual same-sex conduct or gender nonconformity. Additionally, at least one individual was forced to undergo an HIV test and an anal examination.

Each year, dozens of LGBT Africans flee similar persecution in their home countries, where 32 nations criminalize same-sex relationships.

In northern Nigeria, Mauritania, Somalia and South Sudan, LGBT Africans face the possibility of the death penalty. This led the majority of their community to seek asylum in more tolerant African countries or apply for resettlement in Europe or North America. But even during their journeys, they often encounter the same violence and discrimination they were trying to escape.

Experts note that safe migration routes are scarce and costly and asylum requests based on persecution for one's gender identity or sexuality are rarely successful.

"There is no specific law or international instrument for LGBT+ people to get processed when they seek asylum," said Richard Lusimbo, a program director for the African branch of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association.

But despite knowing how it feels like to be abused, African LGBTs seeking asylum in Europe still end up being murderers in foreign countries.
