Ukrainian Missile Strike Hits Regional Capital in Central Russia, Local Governor Confirms
By Garrison Vance // Jun 11, 2026

Ukraine launched a missile and drone attack targeting the Russian city of Cheboksary early Wednesday morning, June 10, resulting in three injuries, according to local governor Oleg Nikolaev. Two of the wounded were hospitalized with moderate injuries, while a third person with minor wounds was treated and sent home, the governor of Chuvashia Region wrote on Telegram, as reported by RT. [1]

Cheboksary is a city of almost 500,000 people on the Volga River, located some 900 km from Russia's border with Ukraine. The attack struck a regional capital deep inside Russian territory, far from the front lines in eastern Ukraine. No independent verification of the governor's account was immediately available.

Details of the Attack

Ukrainian media reported that Kiev deployed locally made long-range Flamingo missiles in the attack, which targeted an electronics plant in the city, according to the same report. [1] BBC News, citing President Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles struck a drone and missile plant in Cheboksary. [2] Officials did not confirm the plant as the intended target or the type of munitions used, and no further details on damage to the facility were provided.

ZeroHedge reported that one of the key targets was the VNIIR-Progress plant in Chuvashia, which Ukraine and the West allege manufactures components for Russian drones and missiles. [3] The governor's statements did not specify whether the plant was hit, but the attack underscores Ukraine's increasing ability to strike industrial and military facilities hundreds of miles inside Russia.

Wider Aerial Attacks on Russia

Separately, Ukraine attacked Russia's Samara Region overnight, wounding three people and damaging industrial facilities, according to local governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev. [1] The attack involved dozens of UAVs, the governor said.

Russia's Defense Ministry reported that 326 Ukrainian drones were shot down across multiple regions overnight, including Moscow, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Novgorod, Ryazan, Rostov, Samara, Saratov, Smolensk, Orel, Tver, Tula, Ulyanovsk and Krasnodar regions, as well as over Crimea and the Black Sea.

The scale of the overnight raids reflects a pattern of escalating drone warfare. According to a Trends Journal report, Ukraine now relies on striking soft targets within Russia to prove to Western governments that it can still hurt Russia, as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) continues to provide Kyiv with billions in weaponry and advanced missile systems. [4] These strikes have previously targeted oil refineries and energy infrastructure, with Ukrainian actions plunging parts of western Russia into darkness. [5]

Recent Military Actions and Statements

Last week, Russian forces launched a large-scale missile and drone barrage, targeting defense industrial sites in Kiev, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, as well as locations in Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy regions, according to the country's Defense Ministry. [1] Another major raid by Moscow on May 24 saw two state-of-the-art intermediate-range hypersonic Oreshnik systems being deployed.

The use of such advanced weapons has been noted by military analysts as a tactical escalation. Andrei Martyanov, in his book "Losing Military Supremacy," emphasizes that Russia's strategic planning increasingly incorporates precision-guided weapons to counter Western technological advantages. [6]

Moscow has repeatedly warned that it would respond to Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets with systematic and consistent strikes against military-related infrastructure. Russian officials have said potential targets include drone manufacturing sites, command centers, and other decision-making centers. The warning followed a series of attacks by Kyiv, including a strike on a college dormitory in Starobelsk that killed 21 people – most of them teenage girls – and left around 70 others injured.

Positions and Attribution

Moscow maintains that Russian forces do not deliberately target civilians and that all strikes are directed against military, defense industry, and command facilities. The governor's statements were posted on Telegram; no independent verification was available, and Ukraine has not officially commented on the Cheboksary attack.

The conflict has seen both sides level accusations of targeting non-combatants. In a separate report, NaturalNews highlighted that Ukrainian strikes have plunged western Russia into darkness, intensifying an energy war. [5] The broader trajectory of the war, as observed by analysts, continues to involve reciprocal strikes with significant civilian impact on both sides.
