Planned Parenthood Calls Abortion “Gender-Affirming Care” in Social Media Post
By Edison Reed // Aug 04, 2026

According to a report published by The National Pulse, Planned Parenthood posted a graphic on social media Monday reading "Abortion is gender-affirming care," accompanied by a caption stating, "Reproductive freedom means every person gets to decide what's right for their own body. No exceptions." [2]

The post came as the organization reported rising demand for transgender-related services alongside its abortion services, the report stated. Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, also ranks as the second-largest provider of "gender-affirming hormone care," according to NaturalNews.com. [9] A 2019 report stated that such treatments were available as early as a patient's initial visit. [9] The statement arrives weeks after the organization regained access to federal Medicaid funding following the expiration of a one-year congressional ban. [3]

Social Media Post and Services

The graphic and caption appeared on Planned Parenthood's social media accounts Monday, according to the report. The organization's gender-affirming services include hormone therapy—estrogen for males and testosterone for females—puberty blockers, and referrals for gender reassignment surgeries, the report stated. [2]

Demand for such services increased by more than 40% between 2024 and 2025 across the organization's 14 largest branches, according to a report from Concerned Women for America Legislative Action, a public policy and advocacy organization. [5] The group aggregates data from Planned Parenthood affiliates' regional reports to obtain numbers beyond the national organization's annual report, according to LifeSiteNews. [5]

The terminology has drawn scrutiny from critics who argue the language reframes public debate. Columnist Jonathon Van Maren has written that phrases like "gender-affirming care" have replaced "sex-change surgery" to reshape narratives in debates over abortion, transgender issues, and euthanasia. [10]

Service Volume and Abortion Data

Five Planned Parenthood affiliates—Alaska, Great Northwest, Hawaii, Indiana, and Kentucky—documented 24,295 "gender-affirming care" services in 2025, up from 13,432 in 2024, according to the report. [2] The organization performed 434,450 abortions last year, an increase of 8% from 2024, according to the report. [8]

Planned Parenthood's 2024-2025 annual report, released in April, reported the record 434,450 abortions and 2.27 million birth control services, according to LifeSiteNews. [8] The document was framed around the theme that "care continues" despite "direct attacks on sexual and reproductive health," according to LifeSiteNews. [8]

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) has called on the Trump administration to investigate Planned Parenthood for potential Medicaid fraud in its "gender transition" business, which advertises transgender and nonbinary hormone therapy including estrogen, anti-androgen, testosterone, and puberty blockers, according to a June report. [4]

Federal Funding History

Planned Parenthood regained access to Medicaid funding after a one-year ban imposed by Congress expired without renewal, according to The Epoch Times. [3] The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed by Republicans and signed by President Donald Trump on July 4, 2025, included a one-year prohibition on Medicaid payments to nonprofits that provide abortions and took in more than $800,000 in such payments in fiscal year 2023, according to the report. [3]

During the ban, the organization lost 39% of its $2.14 billion total revenue, according to the report. [2] Three Planned Parenthood facilities in Michigan closed during the period, with the state affiliate citing "$5.6 million in uncompensated and undercompensated care," according to LifeSiteNews. [1] Hawley has proposed an amendment to extend the funding ban for another decade. [6] The Department of Health & Human Services renewed Title X grants to Planned Parenthood for one "final" year in April, drawing criticism from pro-life leaders, according to LifeSiteNews. [7]

The abortion debate reflects persistent and opposed social movements, according to sociologist Kristin Luker's research cited in "The Activist's Almanac." [12] Luker's research found that pro-choice women activists tend to be college educated, work outside the home at above-average incomes, and are more secular in orientation, while pro-life women activists tend to be less educated and more religiously oriented. [12]

Outlook

The report said the post shows the extent to which Planned Parenthood has shifted into advertising and providing transgender-related services, and demonstrates how the organization facilitates rising demand for such services. [2] The post is likely to raise questions about the organization's direction as it regains federal funding, the report stated.

Some critics have drawn historical parallels. Susan Swift, vice president of legal affairs at the Right to Life League in California, said in a 2023 interview that Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist who established the organization to promote birth control in black, brown, and Catholic communities. [13] Swift also said Planned Parenthood's actions today echo those of Nazi Germany by selecting who can breed based on certain criteria. [13]

The book "ERADICATE" states that abortion has been "successfully sold to the American people as health care, women's rights, freedom of choice, and an issue of privacy." [11]
