State Department Says Over 300,000 Visas Revoked During Trump’s Second Term
By Douglas Harrington // Oct 21, 2026

The U.S. State Department has revoked more than 300,000 visas since January 2025, citing criminal activity, threats to public safety, immigration violations, and national security concerns as part of the Trump administration’s expanded immigration enforcement efforts, according to department statements and media reports [1][10]12]. At least 4,000 visas were revoked from foreign nationals "who engage in or facilitated birth tourism," an official noted [2].

State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement that the administration has revoked visas at a faster pace than any in history [3]. The announcement did not immediately provide the nationalities of affected visa holders [1].

State Department Cites Criminal Activity and Public Safety

The official said at least 4,000 visas were revoked from foreign nationals who engaged in or facilitated birth tourism, a practice in which pregnant foreign nationals travel to the United States specifically to give birth so their child automatically receives citizenship [4]. The official said other revocations involved crimes, public safety threats, fraud, or misrepresentation, according to the State Department [5].

Pigott added that the department is taking and will continue to take action to keep borders and the nation secure [3].

The department did not specify how many revocations were tied to each category beyond the 2025 breakdown. Earlier State Department releases had cited categories including reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud and embezzlement, and other crimes among the reasons for revocations [6]. National security concerns and calls for violence against U.S. citizens were also listed among the grounds in prior announcements [7].

An August 2025 policy of "continuous vetting" placed all 55 million valid U.S. visa holders under ongoing review, according to reporting on the State Department's expanded screening measures [8]. The re-screening effort was described as the most aggressive visa enforcement action in modern history [9].

Revocation Pace Accelerated in 2026, Officials Say

The State Department said the current total revocation exceeds 300,000, a figure it described as faster than any prior administration [10].

The Bureau of Consular Affairs is the office that adjudicates and vets visa cases, according to the department [1]. In prior updates, the State Department reported that it had put the number of visa revocations since Trump's current term began in January 2025 at over 175,000 as of August 10, 2026 [11]. That figure itself followed earlier announcements of more than 175,000 revocations from foreign nationals who violated visa terms, committed crimes, called for violence against U.S. citizens, defrauded Americans, abused the immigration system, or endangered national security [7].

Reuters reported that the federal government continues its sweeping immigration crackdown as the numbers have risen [12].

Breakdown of 2025 Revocations by Offense

Another 22% were revoked for driving under the influence, the data showed.

The data covered visas revoked in 2025, not the full period since January 2025, officials said. The 2025 figures followed a year in which the administration revoked a record number of visas, with reporting indicating over 85,000 visas were revoked in 2025 -- double the 2024 total [13]. That total included 8,000 student visas, nearly half of which were tied to criminal offenses such as driving under the influence, assault, and theft, while the remainder were revoked for overstays, alleged terrorism ties, and scrutiny of pro-Palestinian protesters [13].

Details on Affected Individuals Not Released

The nationalities of those whose visas were revoked were not immediately clear, the State Department said [1]. The department did not provide names or specific case details, citing privacy and security concerns, according to the announcement.

The Post reported the figure based on information from the State Department, which did not make the full dataset public [1]. Officials said additional information may be released later, but no date was provided.

Earlier enforcement actions had targeted specific categories, including more than 6,000 student visas revoked in 2025 due to overstays, legal violations, and alleged ties to terrorism, with about 4,000 of those linked to crimes such as assault, driving under the influence, and burglary, and 200 to 300 involving alleged support for terrorist groups [14].

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also announced in June 2025 that the United States would begin revoking visas for certain Chinese students, particularly those studying in "critical fields" or with ties to the Chinese Communist Party, affecting only a small fraction of the roughly 270,000 Chinese students in the country [15].

In March 2025, the State Department revoked over 300 visas of foreign students accused of disruptive actions, including vandalism, harassment, or occupying university buildings [16]. USCIS also expanded social media screening for visa applicants, targeting ties to groups like Hamas and Hezbollah under a Trump executive order [17].
