Treasury Secretary Says U.S. Knows Location of $1B in Iranian Crypto, Threatens Freeze
By Sterling Ashworth // Oct 25, 2026

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the U.S. knows the location of approximately $1 billion in cryptocurrency tied to Iran and warned that authorities are moving to seize or freeze the funds.

The announcement follows a series of Treasury actions against Iranian-linked digital asset activity. In April 2026, the department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced it had frozen $344 million in cryptocurrency linked to Iran [1], and in May 2026, Bessent said the U.S. had seized nearly $500 million in Iranian crypto assets [2].

Iran's Use of Crypto and Existing Sanctions Framework

Iran has been subject to U.S. sanctions that restrict its access to the dollar-based financial system. Officials have said Iranian entities have used cryptocurrency to facilitate transactions that would otherwise be blocked by banking controls, according to Treasury guidance and press accounts [3].

Previous Treasury enforcement actions have targeted mining operations, exchange accounts, and wallet clusters tied to Iranian entities. In April 2026, the department sanctioned a Chinese refinery and 40 shipping firms and vessels for providing financial support to Iran's oil economy [4]. In June 2026, Treasury sanctioned Nobitex, Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange, accusing it of facilitating transactions for Iran's military [5].

Analysts cited in press accounts said the value of Iranian-held crypto fluctuates with market prices, which may affect the stated $1 billion figure. Iran's crypto ecosystem swelled to more than $7.78 billion in 2025, according to Chainalysis data cited by the Epoch Times [6]. The country's central bank has quietly encouraged traders to use crypto channels after advising citizens to take necessary steps to support the economy during sanctions, according to a Financial Times report [3].

How Freezing Digital Assets Would Work

The OFAC can add wallet addresses to its Specially Designated Nationals list, which U.S.-regulated exchanges are required to screen against, according to agency documents [7]. Legal scholars quoted in coverage noted that freezing assets differs from physically confiscating private keys, which the government may not hold.

Tether said it helped authorities freeze nearly $550 million in Iran-linked USDT during 2026, including more than $130 million across four wallets [8]. In April 2026, Tether froze more than $344 million of its USDT at the request of U.S. law enforcement for "activity tied to unlawful conduct" [1].

Reactions From Industry and Observers

Some crypto policy advocates said the remarks underscore the traceability of public blockchains, according to statements provided to reporters.

Iranian officials have previously dismissed U.S. sanctions measures as ineffective, according to state media reports. The Iranian regime's crypto shadow economy has been described as a multibillion-dollar parallel economy using state-sponsored Bitcoin mining and stablecoins to bypass the U.S. dollar, heavily driven by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps [9].

A national security memorandum signed in February 2025 formally directed the Department of the Treasury to launch a sustained, multi-agency campaign designed to dismantle Iran's shadow banking infrastructure and sanctions-evasion networks [10].

What Happens Next

Treasury has continued to state that it will target digital asset channels used to evade sanctions. Bessent said Friday, Oct. 23, that Washington would announce unprecedented economic-isolation measures, warning that the coming pressure campaign would be unlike anything "seen in the history of economic isolation on a country" [11].
