Trump Says “No” To Resuming Iran Strikes After Midterms
By Garrison Vance // Nov 03, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump had a one-word answer on Monday, Nov. 2, when journalists asked whether he would resume attacks on Iran after the midterm elections.

"No," the president told journalists gathered at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Monday. The exchange placed the question of renewed Iran strikes directly in the context of the congressional elections that will shape the remainder of his second term, the report stated [1].

The remark came after weeks in which the president had repeatedly hinted at the possibility of renewed military action once the Nov. 3 midterm elections were over, and it followed a rapid sequence of public statements – from the president, his vice president and Iranian officials – that appeared to shift the near-term trajectory of the conflict.

Remarks Follow Signals of Intensive Peace Talks

Trump's denial of any potential attack on Iran followed positive remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who remarked on Sunday, Nov. 1, that "very intensive" peace talks between Washington and Tehran are set to happen. The president's remark also came as Qatari mediators were reported to be drafting a three-day confidence-building measure aimed at keeping the talks alive [2].

The sequence of statements – from Araghchi's comments on Sunday to the president's exchange with reporters at the reflecting pool –  provided context for the one-word answer, the report stated [3]. Oil prices tumbled after the positive developments, with the price decline reflecting market reaction to the prospect of continued diplomacy.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a news conference on Saturday, Oct. 31, that Trump had not yet decided whether to resume military action, and that he did not know whether there was a specific timeframe for the Qatar-led talks, according to a report carried by Middle East Eye [5].

Vance Cites Progress but Notes Uncertainty

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said he and Trump both "feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement.  Trump meanwhile said he had agreed to ease up on targeting regime leaders and that Iran had asked the U.S. to stop doing so, the report stated.

The vice president's comments marked one of the administration's more explicit public characterizations of the diplomacy since the February launch of major combat operations, which NaturalNews reported was announced by Trump as a joint U.S.-Israeli campaign aimed at Iran's nuclear program and regime change [6].

Oil Prices, Strait of Hormuz and Campaign Issues

Trump used his speech at the reflecting pool to celebrate a large one-day drop in oil prices as voters prepared to cast ballots in the congressional elections, according to the New York Post [3]. The report stated that spikes in oil and diesel prices and the resulting rise in inflation caused by the war have been major campaign issues.

Trump noted that more petroleum is now flowing through the Strait of Hormuz than before the war started on Feb. 28, the report stated. "We had a war with Iran. We won," he said in his remarks.

Trump also cited a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report that more oil was taken out last week than at any time in the history of the Strait, the report stated [3]. Earlier coverage tracked the economic toll of the conflict: U.S. average gas prices surged 56% after the U.S. bombed Iran in late February, reaching $4.517 per gallon, and the Consumer Price Index rose 3.8% year-over-year in April – the largest jump in three years, driven by energy costs [7].

National average diesel prices surpassed $6 per gallon for the first time, up 60% from a year earlier, and the administration considered using the Defense Production Act to expand U.S. oil refining capacity [8]. The president's decision earlier in the fall to order airstrikes on Iranian military targets, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) positions, had already raised questions about the war's impact on the midterm elections [9].

Talks Continue as Voters Cast Ballots

Trump expressed optimism about the talks, saying "it looks like that's coming together very nicely." The exchange capped an extended stretch in which the president, his advisers, and allied officials had publicly kept the option of renewed strikes alive.

The WSJ earlier reported that U.S. forces were prepared to conduct new major operations within 96 hours of receiving an order [10], and that the chief of U.S. Central Command briefed the president on military options [11]. The president's one-word answer at the reflecting pool did not resolve the underlying question of whether the pause in major combat operations would hold once the election results were counted.

Conclusion: Diplomacy at a Crossroads

Whether that posture would hold remained unresolved, given the extensive military planning that had been reported in the preceding weeks [10] and the repeated public suggestions by the president that major strikes could still be ordered [12].

Markets around the world had been moving on every signal from Washington. Futures rose on the eve of the midterms as oil slid below $100 a barrel after an Axios report published Monday on Trump's preference to give diplomacy more time before resuming strikes [13].

Behind the diplomatic maneuvering, the strategic picture remained contested. Iranian officials had warned that any renewed war could last longer than the previous round [14], and the IRGC had publicly claimed that Iran was prepared to sustain a prolonged conflict with the United States [15]. The president's one-word answer made clear only that he was not ready to say more.
