Sylvester Stallone reveals why he loves Donald Trump

Sylvester Stallone recently told Variety that he once considered becoming a politician for five minutes, but he soon came to his senses.

In the 1980s, Stallone’s character Rambo became an iconic figure, almost inseperable from the decade’s age of Reaganism. So it’s not surprising that Stallone is presumed to be a Republican. However, although he supportted John McCain’s bid for the presidency in 2008, he claims to be politically independent.

Stallone roots for Trump

When asked by Variety what he thinks of the current Republican frontrunner, Stallone said, “I love Donald Trump.” But he also referred to Trump as “a great Dickensian character,” and asked, “You know what I mean?”[1]

Well, according to the Oxford Dictionary, it means “reminiscent of the novels of Charles Dickens, especially in suggesting the poor social conditions or comically repulsive characters that they portray.” So does Stallone really love Trump, or does he think he’s a comically repulsive character?[2]

Either way, Stallone admits, “I don’t know how that translates to running the world.” Ultimately, he chose not to pick sides, offering only the non-committal cliché, “May the best fighter win.”

Reviews for Creed

Speaking of boxing, Stallone’s latest Rocky movie has shocked everyone, by it being really good. As sportswriter Dave Zirin writes:

“The old man nails it. His wry melancholy, which comes off him in waves, is at times overwhelming. Whether it’s Rocky’s quiet grief when talking about his lost love Adrian or Stallone’s obvious pain when holding up a photo of his real-life son Sage, who played Rocky’s son in Rocky V and died in 2012, you feel his quiet pain. People are saying this should be Stallone’s Oscar. Who cares? All I know is, when the film ended, I didn’t want to give him an Oscar. I wanted to give him a hug. Stallone’s Rocky is family, and you don’t turn your back on family…. As a result, we have a franchise reborn and a young director and actor announcing their intention to take the world by storm. Yo, Adrian, they did it.”[3]
