Experts now urging pause on 5G rollout after study reveals regulators were ignoring health risks of radiation
By Belle Carter // Oct 25, 2022

Scientists called for a moratorium on the rollout of 5G after a study revealed that government regulators were not being fully transparent on the technology's health hazards.

A study conducted by the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF) and subsequently published in public health journal Environmental Health highlighted the risks of exposure to radiation from 5G technology. Researchers also said the existing exposure limits for wireless radiation are inadequate, outdated and harmful to human health and wildlife.

In this regard, ICBE-EMF called for an independent assessment of the dangers and impacts of wireless radiation and "an immediate moratorium on the further rollout of 5G wireless technologies until safety is demonstrated and not simply assumed."

Lead study author Dr. Lennart Hardell said in a press release that multiple robust human studies of cell phone radiation have found increased risks for brain tumors. "These are supported by clear evidence of carcinogenicity of the same cell types found in animal studies," he continued.

Hardell and his co-authors also blasted regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection for ignoring the risks of 5G, even though a multitude of studies indicating the dangers of exposure to wireless radiation are already in print.

The ICBE-EMF is a multi-disciplinary consortium of scientists, doctors and related professionals who are, or have been, involved with research related to the biological and health effects of electromagnetic frequencies up to and including 300 GHz and dedicated to ensuring the protection of humans and other species from the harmful effects of non-ionizing radiation.

Pregnant, children, EMF hypersensitive are the most at risk

The Defender, the official news outlet of the nonprofit Children's Health Defense, interviewed study authors Hardell and Joel M. Moskowitz, director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the University of California, Berkeley's School of Public Health. The two authors discussed their findings and their advocacy to raise awareness of the dangers of 5G.

According to Moskowitz, exposure to cell phones and other wireless devices should be limited, especially for pregnant women, children and those electromagnetically hypersensitive. As much as possible, these people should at least minimize their exposure to wireless radiation, they advised.

They also compiled suggestions on how to reduce wireless radiation exposure via an online resource. These include keeping devices such as smartphones and cordless phones at a distance from the body and particularly the head; using these devices in areas where there is a strong signal; reducing secondhand exposure to other individuals' devices; and switching off household wireless devices at bedtime.

"The 5G technology has many new features never tested for safety, including different carrier frequencies, new modulation and pulsing schemes, beam-forming, phased arrays, and massive MIMO [multiple input, multiple outputs]," Moskowitz said. "The proximity of small cell antennas near where people live and work could pose health problems in addition to wireless radiation exposure from 5G cellphones."

Meanwhile, Hardell noted that the pulses can be extremely high with 5G technology. "The risks are not studied, especially not long-term," he said. (Related: Still think 5G is harmless? Scientific American issues warnings about the confirmed and UNKNOWN DANGERS of 5G tech.)
