DHS cuts $2.7M in Harvard funding over antisemitism failures, left-wing indoctrination
By Laura Harris // Apr 23, 2025

  • Students supporting Hamas or pro-Palestine protests risk visa cancellations and deportation by 2025, with universities potentially losing federal funding if they fail to combat antisemitism.
  • The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revoked over $2.7 million in grants, accusing Harvard of promoting antisemitism, biased research and "radical left indoctrination."
  • President Donald Trump claims Harvard is "woke" and unworthy of federal funding, while his administration moves to strip its tax-exempt status over antisemitism concerns.
  • Harvard President Alan Garber refused to comply with federal demands (mask bans, program audits, student expulsions), citing institutional independence and constitutional rights.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has canceled Harvard University's more than $2.7 million in federal grants over its alleged failure to address antisemitism on campus and accusations of promoting "radical left indoctrination."

On April 14, the university refused to comply with a series of demands from the Trump administration to combat antisemitism on campus. These demands include a "comprehensive mask ban" (potentially targeting demonstrators concealing identities); an audit of departments and programs accused of fostering antisemitic harassment; and expulsion of two students criminally charged for accosting an Israeli classmate after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks.

"We have informed the administration through our legal counsel that we will not accept their proposed agreement," Harvard President Alan Garber wrote. "The University will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights." (Related: Trump clashes with Maine governor over transgender athletes, threatens federal FUNDING CUTS.)

As a response, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem cancelled more than $2.7 million in federal grants to the university.

In a press release on April 16, the DHS announced that Noem terminated two grants, one worth $800,303 and another worth $1,934,902. She accused Harvard of promoting biased research and "public health propaganda" that undermines national security. Additionally, Noem demanded records on foreign student visa holders involved in what she called "illegal and violent activities."

"Harvard bending the knee to antisemitism – driven by its spineless leadership – fuels a cesspool of extremist riots and threatens our national security," Noem said in the press release. "With anti-American, pro-Hamas ideology poisoning its campus and classrooms, Harvard's position as a top institution of higher learning is a distant memory. America demands more from universities entrusted with taxpayer dollars."

Trump claims Harvard does not deserve federal funding anymore

That same day, President Donald Trump claimed in a social media post that Harvard had "lost its way" and no longer deserved federal funding.

"Harvard has been hiring almost all woke, radical left, idiots and 'birdbrains' who are only capable of teaching FAILURE to students and so-called 'future leaders,'" Trump wrote. "Look just to the recent past at their plagiarizing President, who so greatly embarrassed Harvard before the United States Congress."

"Many others, like these leftist dopes, are teaching at Harvard, and because of that, Harvard can no longer be considered even a decent place of learning, and should not be considered on any list of the World's Great Universities or Colleges," he continued.

Trump, who has repeatedly accused elite universities of left-wing bias, went further, asserting: "Harvard is a JOKE, teaches Hate and Stupidity, and should no longer receive Federal Funds."

In turn, the Trump administration has instructed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to revoke the university's tax-exempt status over its alleged failure to address antisemitism on campus. The IRS is expected to issue a final decision shortly. If the move proceeds, Harvard, one of the wealthiest universities in the world, could lose millions in tax benefits under its 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation.
