A national watchdog group has revealed that other medical, nursing and health science programs continue to require Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines.
Lucia Sinatra, co-founder of No College Mandates, revealed that her organization continues to hear from healthcare students who are either denied admission or unable to complete degree requirements due to ongoing vaccination policies. Sinatra noted that in some cases, students are accepted into programs without mention of vaccine requirements, only to learn two years in that their assigned clinical rotation sites demand proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Without compliance, students risk delayed graduation or being unable to finish their program at all.
"Healthcare students and healthcare programs seem to be governed by different rules than general population student programs at colleges," Sinatra said in a telephone interview with the College Fix this month.
According to the information gathered by No College Mandates, programs that do still have explicit mandates include Emory University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and its affiliated nursing school. Texas Wesleyan University also maintains a COVID-19 vaccine requirement for nursing students.
Sinatra also revealed that many schools obscure their vaccine requirements online, while some mandates were passed down from external clinical partners rather than the academic institutions themselves.
One such example is the University of San Francisco's School of Nursing and Health Professions, which explicitly states that its clinical partners require COVID-19 vaccination and that non-compliance may "slow or stop" a student's progress toward their degree. Meanwhile, some institutions, like the University of Washington (UW), have loosened requirements. The UW does not currently mandate COVID-19 vaccination for its healthcare students, but they may still be subject to the policies of the clinical sites they're assigned to.
Sinatra urges Congress to close the loophole
All this, despite a February executive order from President Donald Trump aiming to defund schools that impose such mandates.
"It is the policy of my administration that discretionary federal funds should not be used to directly or indirectly support or subsidize an educational service agency, state educational agency, local educational agency, elementary school, secondary school or institution of higher education that requires students to have received a COVID-19 vaccination to attend any in-person education program," the executive order read.
According to Brighteon.AI's Enoch, the order does not specifically exempt health programs, but enforcement has proven murky.
In turn, Sinatra is pushing for Congress to pass legislation to make the ban permanent, given that executive orders can be reversed by future administrations. She supports a bill introduced by Rep. Mark Messmer (R-IN) that would prohibit COVID-19 vaccine mandates for college students and staff. However, Sinatra is calling for amendments to ensure the law covers healthcare students and their clinical partners.
"If it's amended to include healthcare students through the entirety of their program so that they can reach completion, well then that's a whole different bill," Sinatra said. "Now we're telling medical schools and their partner hospitals and their clinical partners, on the education part of their businesses, they cannot mandate these vaccines because those are college students."
Sinatra also revealed that she has been contacting federal officials, including Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Health Secretary Robert Kennedy, urging them to address the "inconsistent and unfair" system for healthcare students.
