President Donald Trump said Feb. 16 that those responsible for the abduction of the mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie could face the death penalty if she is not found alive.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31 in Catalina Foothills, a community of roughly 52,000 residents just outside Tucson, Arizona. According to relatives, she had dinner with family members before being driven home. Security records indicate her garage door opened at approximately 9:48 p.m. and closed about two minutes later.
Authorities said that in the early hours of Feb. 1, her doorbell camera was disconnected. At 2:12 a.m., the camera registered movement, and about 15 minutes later, an application connected to her heart pacemaker was removed from her phone.
After Nancy Guthrie failed to attend church that Sunday, family members reported her missing. The investigation remains ongoing.
In line with this, Trump said in an interview with the New York Post that the abductors would face "the most severe" consequences if 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie is confirmed dead. When asked whether that meant federal prosecutors would seek capital punishment, the president responded, "Yeah, that's true."

"I spoke with Savannah Guthrie, and let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family's, and Local Law Enforcement's, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY. We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform on Feb. 4. "The prayers of our nation are with her and her family. GOD BLESS AND PROTECT NANCY!"
In line with this, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the location of Nancy Guthrie or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.
The FBI has released surveillance images and video captured by Guthrie's doorbell camera, describing a suspect as a man between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-10 with an average build. In the footage made public last week, the individual is seen wearing dark gloves, sweatpants and a jacket. Authorities said the suspect was carrying a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack.
Investigators have not publicly identified the individual or announced any arrests, but the president said he believes "progress has been made" in the investigation.
