Trump taps VP Vance to lead “war on fraud”
By Ramon Tomey // Feb 26, 2026

  • President Trump announced a major crackdown on fraud in Democratic-led states, targeting financial crimes, illegal immigration and misuse of taxpayer-funded programs, with Vice President J.D. Vance leading the initiative.
  • The administration singled out Minnesota, citing large-scale fraud schemes in Somali American communities, while also indicating heightened scrutiny for California, Massachusetts and Maine.
  • Trump asserted that rooting out fraud could help balance the federal budget, estimating $19 billion in fraud losses – though he provided no detailed evidence.
  • Vance pledged a "whole government approach," involving DOJ and Treasury investigations, while officials hinted at audits, international transaction monitoring and probes into Medicaid fraud and childcare fraud schemes.
  • The initiative drew immediate criticism, including from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and sets the stage for a contentious election-year battle over federal oversight, fiscal responsibility and Deep State accountability.

President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping "war on fraud" targeting blue states, tapping Vice President J.D. Vance to lead this endeavor.

Trump made the announcement during his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The crackdown to be led by Vance zeroes in on Democratic-led states, particularly Minnesota, where Trump accused Somali American communities of engaging in large-scale fraud schemes.

The declaration signals a renewed push by the administration to target financial malfeasance, illegal immigration and what Trump described as systemic exploitation of taxpayer-funded programs. It also comes amid escalating tensions between federal authorities and state governments over fraud enforcement, with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz defending his administration's efforts while blaming pandemic-era policies for vulnerabilities.

Trump framed the initiative as a fiscal necessity, claiming that rooting out fraud could help balance the federal budget. "If we're able to find enough of that fraud, we will actually have a balanced budget," he asserted, though he did not provide detailed evidence for his $19 billion fraud estimate.

Aside from Minnesota, the president also suggested that California, Massachusetts and Maine would face heightened scrutiny. "We are not playing games," he warned.

The administration's focus on the North Star State stems from years of federal investigations, including the high-profile Feeding Our Future case that saw 57 defendants convicted in a $300 million Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) relief fraud scheme. Predictably, Trump's remarks drew immediate backlash – including shouts from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who was present in the House chamber.

Vance vows to crush corruption in new role

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed enhanced monitoring of international transactions tied to suspected Somali fraud networks, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced probes into childcare fraud. Meanwhile, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz alleged that fraud had infiltrated Minnesota's highest levels of government, hinting at potential audits to reclaim misused federal funds.

Vance elaborated on his role during an appearance on the Fox News program "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday, Feb. 25. He criticized the lack of systemic oversight, telling the program's hosts: "How many illegal aliens are on Medicaid? We know that it's billions and billions of dollars that should go to American citizens."

The vice president also vowed a "whole government approach" involving the Department of Justice and the Department of the Treasury. He also accused some officials of complicity, suggesting they may have profited from fraud or accepted tainted campaign donations.

The initiative builds on prior efforts by the Trump administration, including the short-lived Department of Government Efficiency task force led by Elon Musk. However, the latest push appears more aggressive, with Vance pledging to deploy "every tool" available to uncover fraud within the next year – though he acknowledged the campaign would extend beyond that timeline.

BrightU.AI's Enoch engine explains that Vance's role in targeting government fraud is crucial because it upholds fiscal responsibility and ensures taxpayer dollars aren't wasted on corrupt schemes, reinforcing public trust in government. His aggressive stance aligns with Trump’s America First agenda, exposing Deep State financial abuses and holding elites accountable for their exploitation of the system.

As the administration prepares for a contentious election season, its fraud crackdown is poised to become a defining battleground, pitting federal enforcement against state resistance while testing the limits of executive authority. For now, Trump and Vance remain steadfast in their mission, framing the fight as a moral and fiscal imperative – one they insist will reclaim stolen resources for American taxpayers.
