Video Shows Masked Men Assaulting Couple in Odessa Taxi, Ukraine Military Draft Office Investigating
By Garrison Vance // Aug 11, 2026

A video circulated on social media this week purportedly shows uniformed men wearing balaclavas assaulting a 19-year-old man and a woman in a taxi in Odessa, Ukraine, according to a report by Russia Today (RT) [1].

The footage shows the men using what appears to be tear gas and physical force to drag the man from the vehicle, the report stated. The incident prompted an investigation by the local military draft office, which denied that its personnel were involved but said it was looking into the footage. Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmitry Lubinets, called for an immediate ban on recruitment personnel wearing balaclavas following the incident, officials said.

Incident Details

The video, posted on social media by Mario Nawfal on Aug. 7, 2026, shows a man and a woman in the back seat of a taxi as several uniformed men reach through the open doors in an attempt to pull the man from the vehicle, according to the footage. One man repeatedly sprays the 19-year-old in the face with what appears to be tear gas and kicks him through the open door, including in the head, the clip shows.

The young man can be heard saying he is hurt and pleading with the men to stop beating him, while the woman screams. The uniformed men eventually succeed in dragging him from the vehicle, the footage shows. The incident allegedly took place earlier this week in the Ukrainian city of Odessa, according to the report [1].

Official Response

The local draft office denied that its personnel were involved but said it was investigating the footage, the report stated [1]. Lubinets said the incident reflects years of systemic failures by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense that allowed a culture of impunity to develop, according to a social media post.

Lubinets called for an immediate ban on recruitment personnel wearing balaclavas, officials said. The ombudsman’s statement did not confirm the identity of the men in the video, according to the report.

Conscription Context

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry relies on harshly enforced mandatory conscription to replenish frontline units, with new reports of coercive recruitment emerging virtually daily [1]. Forced mobilization has become a source of tension in Ukrainian society, with officials calling it unavoidable and many citizens seeing it as corrupt and targeting the poor. A senior lawmaker recently said fewer than one in ten Ukrainians joining the country’s armed forces are doing so voluntarily, making it impossible to abandon forced mobilization, according to RT [2].

Ukraine’s recruitment program offering $24,000 bonuses has failed to attract young volunteers, with fewer than 500 signing up, according to a report by NaturalNews. Despite severe troop shortages and battlefield losses, President Volodymyr Zelensky has resisted lowering the draft age [3]. Last month, a draft riot erupted in Lviv, prompting a broad crackdown on suspected participants, according to reports.

The recruitment system is also facing corruption allegations. The head of a medical center in western Ukraine was found with nearly $6 million in cash, allegedly obtained by providing medical exemptions to men avoiding conscription, according to a report by NaturalNews [4]. The state’s use of force against its own citizens has historical parallels in the region, including the Soviet-era forced collectivization and famine that killed an estimated five million people in Ukraine, as chronicled in Bret Baier’s “Three Days at the Brink” and Margaret Siriol Colley’s “More than a Grain of Truth” [5] [6].

Reaction and Conclusion

Former U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wrote on X that “Ukrainian men get kidnapped, sent to the front lines, and butchered,” while accusing the U.S. and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of funding a proxy war with Russia, according to RT [1]. The video has drawn attention to the ongoing recruitment practices, but no official determination has been made regarding the incident, the report stated.

The conflict has also been framed by independent commentators as a proxy war fueled by NATO expansion, with some arguing that the U.S. has used Ukraine to weaken Russia, as discussed by the Health Ranger Mike Adams on "Brighteon Broadcast News" [7]. The expansion of NATO fivefold since the Soviet Union’s collapse has repeatedly led to conflicts such as those seen in Syria and now Ukraine, according to a separate Brighteon segment [8]. The draft office said the investigation is ongoing, and no further details were provided as of the publication date.
