Is the West scapegoating Benjamin Netanyahu to protect its genocidal enterprise in the Middle East?
By Lance D Johnson // Oct 02, 2026

The recent international shunning of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly underscores a seismic shift in global politics. Once a darling of Western powers, Netanyahu now finds himself increasingly isolated, even among his staunchest allies. Yet, this shift is not a triumph of justice but a calculated political maneuver to deflect scrutiny from the West’s complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The truth is stark: Netanyahu’s decline is not a moral reckoning but a strategic pivot to obscure the broader role of Western governments and corporations in enabling Israel’s ethnic cleansing.

Key points:

  • The snub was staged as much as spontaneous. Netanyahu's eight-hour UN visit, the 77-delegation walkout, and the denied meetings with Trump and Rubio signal a deliberate repositioning by Western governments ahead of Israel's election.
  • Scapegoating protects the policy. Blaming one leader lets governments avoid accountability for the shared decisions, weapons, intelligence, and diplomatic cover that sustained the war.
  • The timing follows the polls, not conscience. Outrage arrived once Netanyahu became electorally costly, with Pew showing 62 percent of Americans holding a negative view of his government. A principle that appears only when polling turns is a tactic.
  • The West Bank focus is a convenient pivot. Settlement expansion was sponsored by Israeli governments for over half a century, so presenting it as one man's innovation lets Western capitals pose as bystanders while imposing low-cost sanctions.
  • Rhetoric and action diverge. Arms licences reportedly remain in place, intelligence sharing continues, and protesters were arrested under terrorism law for holding a sign, even as officials declared that war critics "were right."
  • Rights must apply universally, and the opposing case deserves a hearing. Accountability should cover October 7 victims and Palestinian civilians alike.

A political survivor’s downfall?

Netanyahu’s 20-year reign as Israel’s prime minister has been marked by a relentless escalation of ultra-nationalist policies, including the expansion of illegal settlements, the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank, and the catastrophic three-year assault on Gaza. His recent UN address, laden with biblical dog-whistles and genocidal rhetoric, was a desperate bid to rally domestic support as Israeli voters increasingly question his leadership. Yet, the real story lies not in Netanyahu’s personal decline but in the West’s growing unease with the scale of civilian casualties in Gaza and the global backlash against its role in arming and enabling Israel’s war machine.

The West’s sudden interest in “sanctioning” West Bank settlements and condemning “ethnic cleansing” is a hollow gesture. For decades, successive Israeli governments under Netanyahu and his predecessors have pursued settlement expansion as a cornerstone of their colonial project. The current focus on Netanyahu is a distraction, a way for Western leaders to absolve themselves of guilt by framing him as a rogue actor rather than acknowledging their own complicity. The UK’s Andy Burnham and US Secretary Marco Rubio, for instance, have avoided meaningful action on Gaza while quietly greenlighting arms sales and intelligence sharing with Israel.

The Gaza genocide: A global business

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza - where over 37,000 people, including 21,000 children, have been killed - has exposed the fragility of the West’s moral authority. Documentaries like Naza, which reveals Israeli soldiers’ firsthand accounts of engineering genocide, and the global protests from Irish athletes to Ed Sheeran’s backlash, signal a cultural and ethical reckoning. Yet, Western governments cling to the illusion of a “two-state solution” while continuing to supply Israel with bombs and surveillance technology. The recent shipment of “mega bombs” by the Trump administration, capable of unleashing eight times the explosive force of Hiroshima, exemplifies this hypocrisy.

Western leaders, including Trump, Burnham, and Macron, are not seeking justice for Palestinians but a return to “business as usual” - a slower, more palatable form of ethnic cleansing. By scapegoating Netanyahu, they hope to rebrand the Gaza genocide as the work of a single “pariah” rather than a systemic project backed by global elites. This narrative ignores the fact that Israel’s political spectrum, from right-wing extremists like Bezalel Smotrich to centrist factions, shares a genocidal vision for Palestine. Even if Netanyahu loses power, his successors will continue the same policies, as seen in the central elections committee’s exclusion of Palestinian voices from Israel’s democratic process.

A call for human-centered justice

The path forward demands more than symbolic gestures. True accountability requires:

  • Ending arms sales to Israel and other authoritarian regimes.
  • Sanctioning Western corporations complicit in Palestine’s destruction (e.g., Palantir, Elbit Systems).
  • Amplifying Palestinian voices in global discourse and policy-making.
  • Challenging the myth of “Jewish supremacy” in both Israel and diaspora communities.
  • Prioritizing human rights over geopolitical convenience.

Netanyahu’s political survival is not the issue: it is the system that made his actions possible. The West’s current pivot away from this character is a desperate attempt to maintain control over the narrative, not a genuine shift toward justice. Until we confront the globalist networks that profit from conflict, violence, and exploitation, the genocide in Gaza will continue, and the West will be submitted to a system of perpetual self righteous bloodshed.
