For years, Fauci had approved funding for gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where scientists manipulated viruses to study their potential to infect humans.
When COVID-19 emerged, Fauci found himself in a precarious position. Emails reveal he and his colleagues worked to distance the NIAID from any connection to the outbreak, fearing reputational damage and public backlash.
